This is an excellent example of an 18th century coffer which has been well looked after.

Constructed in English oak with a frame which is peg jointed and plain raised and fielded panels inset.

An old iron lock and brass escutcheon are in place thought the key has long since been lost (replacements are easy for a lock shop to obtain for about £10-£15)

Inside, a couple of base boards have been replaced, though probably at least a century ago, and the original split-pin hinges have been replaced with late 18th century strap hinges. The lid has at some stage had extra strengthenning batons added. There has also been an old repair to the hinge area of the lid on one side.

The patination is as good or better as one would expect and it is very well polished.

All round in superb condition commensurate with age, and not requiring any work - It is ready to add genuine early period character to your home.

Expect to pay between £750-£1250 for a coffer like this in an Antiques shop, offered here at an extremely low start price with no reserve.
