Antique Framed Coloured Stipple Engraving
Title: THE NIGHTINGALES SONG
Possibly JENNY LIND often known as the "Swedish Nightingale". Johanna Maria Lind (1820-1887), better known as Jenny Lind, was a Swedish-born opera singer. In January 1849, Jenny Lind performed in a concert in Norwich, organised by the Norwich Choral Society. She stayed with the Bishop of Norwich whom she credited with developing her charitable purpose. She liked the city so much that she gave two free concerts a month later; which raised £1,253 for charitable purposes. The money raised was used to buy a house in Pottergate, Norwich, which was converted and opened as the 20-bed Jenny Lind Infirmary for Sick Children, on 3 April 1854
Subject:
Young woman sits on a window seat in deep contemplation with her chin resting on her hand listening to the sound of a Nightingale bird singing. The Nightingale can be seen through the window on a branch of a tree in the moonlight. The scene is very Art Nouveau with its floral and organic nature.
Date: circa 1900
Size of Frame: 13" x 9" x 0.25"
Beautiful antique glass framed coloured stipple engraving. I do not know who the original artist and or engraver was but it is possible that details are hidden within the frame as I have not touched the back of the frame or attempted to remove the engraving.
The frame is a piece of glass with its original brown card backing in which its original string is still attached and so the frame is ready to hang. The glass and backing card are joined together by a type of leatherette material or tape. The glass was very dusty when I first acquired the framed print and I have cleaned the outside but there is still some dust on the underside of the glass. I have not attempted to remove the backing card to remove the glass to clean it as the buyer may not want the item disturbed.
I am happy to just send the engraving on its own without the glass frame - please see below for the various postage costs.
I have researched on the Internet to see if I could find the image in the engraving. It would seem that the bird, the Nightingale was a popular subject matter in the 19th and 20th Centuries, in art, poetry and literature. The French artist William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) painted an oil painting in 1895 titled, THE SONG OF THE NIGHTINGALE and the following is a list of some of the poems I had found related to the Nightingale - “The Nightingale” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1772-1834; “O Nightingale!” by William Wordsworth 1770-1850; “Ode to a Nightingale” by John Keats 1795-1821; “Bianca Among The Nightingales” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning 1806-1861; “Sweeney among the Nightingales” by T S Eliot [Thomas Stearns Eliot, OM] 1888-1965. The literature includes “The Nightingale Song of David” a religious book by Octavius Winslow, 1808-1878 and “The Nightingale” a story by Hans Christian Andersen 1805-1875.
However I did find reference to the Swedish- born opera singer, JENNY LIND known as the “Swedish Nightingale”. Many of the images of Jenny Lind on the Internet look like the woman in the engraving (although hairstyles and costumes in the image would match not only Jenny Lind but any other fashionable woman of the time period). But I did buy the engraving from a fine arts sale in an auction house in Beccles in Suffolk which is not far from Norwich in Norfolk and in 1849 Jenny Lind performed in a concert in Norwich, organised by the Norwich Choral Society and so it might be possible that this engraving is a souvenir of an opera in which Jenny Lind performed in Norwich.
Johanna Maria Lind (1820-1887),better known as Jenny Lind, was a Swedish-born opera singer, often known as the "Swedish Nightingale". After her marriage in February 1852 to Otto Goldschmidt she often signed her name as Jenny Lind-Goldschmidt. She is known for her performances in soprano roles in Sweden and Europe, as well as for an extraordinarily popular tour of America beginning in 1850, and for her philanthropic work. Lind travelled to London in 1847, where her first performance, in the presence of Queen Victoria at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 4 May, was in the role of Alice in Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera Robert le diable. In July the same year, she took part in the world première of Giuseppe Verdi's opera I masnadieri at the theatre. Her successes extended to her regional tour of Britain and Ireland as well as to her performances at the Continent, and she became extremely popular and wealthy. Lind became also known for her philanthropy of cultural and humanitarian causes, which continued for many years. The money raised was used to buy a house in Pottergate, Norwich, which was converted and opened as the 20-bed Jenny Lind Infirmary for Sick Children, on 3 April 1854.

This item is part of a collection of frames that came from an auction house in Suffolk. Some are Adirondack / Criss Cross Frames and others are frames with Art Nouveau decoration on the fascia and others look to be early Victorian. Some of the frames contain old sepia photographs and others contain religious prints or First First World War Postcards or paintings. I am selling them all separately on my site. Each came from a fine arts sale at an auction house in Suffolk and were in a box of frames which the auction house had referred to as Religious Tract Pictures and frames. The frames were very dusty and looked like they had been in the box for years and years. I have obviously given the frames and glass a surface wipe over but am leaving it to the buyer to give a more thorough job if felt necessary.
