English School Cavalier Portrait Watercolour Painting

Description: An exquisite portrait watercolour on artist's paper dating circa Circa 1900, framed - approx 21 X 11 inches (53.34 X 27.94cm). This is an exquisite English School watercolour dating from the Victorian period. The portrait depicts the most stunningly detailed study of a wonderful character from the 17th Century. A really fabulous, almost photographic image, the Cavalier stands before green velvet drapes, the corner of a stone wall just visible, the oak floorboards scattered with leaves. His clothing is richly extravagant, wearing golden shoes with blue ribbon rosettes, wearing brown hose above which are his burgandy coloured velvet breeches decorated with light blue ribbons above which he wears a matching elaborate jacket with large cuffs decorated with laced golden braid. Around his shoulders he wears a fur lined cape. His fasionable long hair is shaded by a cream decorated hat. The face of the Cavalier is wonderfully detailed, sporting a blonde beard and moustache as he looks down, cleaning his rapier with a cream satin laced handkerchief. This wealthy Royalist and supporter of King Charles I has successfully defeated a Roundhead in battle during the English Civil War, standing pondering his victory for the time being. A truly beautiful piece of late 19th Century art, by a very gifted artist, although unsigned.
Date: The watercolour probably dates to around Circa 1900.
Framing: Later plain moulded Pine. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a off-white mount.
Condition: The painting is in fabulous original condition, retaining deep rich colouring with no signs of fading. The later frame has a few minor chips and dings, giving an antiqued distressed finish.
