Of all the Edelweiss Plants,  Leontopodium alpinium is the most beautiful and sought after in the world.
This dainty, white wildflower of the European Alps,  with tufted blossoms appearing as patches of snow in late spring , has been a token of love throughout the ages.
Retrieving it from difficult to reach crags and ledges at high altitudes proved a suitor’s prowess.
This challenge was always hard to resist, especially for young men in the latter half of the 19th century.
During this quest to gain a lovers favour or just plainly to earn some cash selling the flowers, many pickers fell to their deaths, as many as 50 in just one season.
 
The tragedies and dangers involved in collecting this beautiful plant led to a romantic popularity, and as a result, the little alpine flower has been featured in folklore through verse, song and story.
It is an excellent selection for rockeries or alpine gardens, the petals are actually woolly bracts, and the flower heads look like lions feet, hence the latin name
Ht 20cm, Sp 10cm  - prefers a well~drained soil.
