Built as one of a special production run by Alien Ocean, this bike is tongue in cheek style, taking inspiration from the laid back USA cruisers. I fell for its charm straight away. What the photos don't convey is the sheer presence of it with its oversize frame tubing, chunky tyres, comfy saddle and shiny fenders. Its a bicycle trying to be a hog (Harley Davidson) and you can't help smiling when you ride it!
That would be good enough as an ordinary bike..but this one has power. A 36V 250watt front wheel drive electric motor fed from a lithium ion battery mounted in the pannier rack. This is the most powerful ebike thats road legal and you don't need a licence.
It has 3 choices of operating
1) Pedal only (power off)
2)Pedal assist (power on): where you pedal and a clever sensor picks up if you need a little help (such as going up a hill) and kicks the motor power in proportionally. This feels odd at first but its the mode I used most. You still get some exercise but don't end up puffed out after the hard bits or if the wind is against you. It also conserves battery power so you can go further on a charge. You still use the gears as normal to keep up road speed.
3)Throttle only (power on): You just twist the throttle ( even from standstill) and you let it take you for a ride. Its not motorbike like performance though and the motor can struggle on steep or long inclines when you will need to help it along with some moderate pedalling input.
I preferred to use the throttle only option as a boost or when coasting through twisty bits.
The bike is capable of around 15mph under full power and steady pedalling although you can get more out of it down hills with a following wind. The difference is that the motor takes your effort out of the equation.
Yes, the battery is fairly heavy but it's a lot lighter than the cheaper lead acid types and it gives more power. An intelligent charger plugs in with the battery still on the bike and gives the right amount of top up. It is recommended to charge it after every use no matter how small and I have followed this guideline in an effort to keep it in good condition. I have never taken it on a long journey so the battery has never run flat. The battery unit slides out if necessary but is normally locked in place via the ignition switch. I have cable tied it to stop it rattling.
The large tyres and big saddle make it very comfy to ride. It came with a basic shimano gear mech which I have upgraded to a Tourney mech (see photo) and indexed grip shift. This gives much smoother gear changing and is quieter. I also swapped the gear and throttle controls around to make the gear change the priority on the right hand and put the throttle on the left. This means the throttle works upside down but oddly is more comfortable to use. I have also put on a wireless cycle computer (because I like toys) which stays on with the sale. The lighting system is fantastic and is integrated with the power supply. The front LED lamp is actually effective at night. The back even has a brake light and indicators. I have put some extra LED flashers on for cyclepath travelling. If you attach some pannier bags, the battery is covered up and so it doesn't look like an ebike. only the motor whine from the front wheel gives it away. The controller unit is housed in the triangular bag in the frame.
Alien Ocean are a great company who have really thought about the
electric bike market. I test rode a few models from larger companies
and always found issues which turned me off buying , not least of all
because most don't look very good in my view. Alien Ocean design the
bikes from a riders angle and then apply some common sense. Check out
their website www.alienbikes.co.uk.
I have had the bike for about a year. I was having health problems which stopped me using a normal pushbike and so bought it to make my short commute to work easier. It did this and more. It got me back into exercising more regularly which helped me lose weight and improve healthwise generally so I am back into serious cycling again. I have reluctantly decided to part with the cruiser as I now need some funds towards a new road bike.
It is in pretty good condition and I have kept it well maintained because I like to look after the things I own.
Addtion: The frame size is 49cms or 19 1/4" (due to the style of frame) with an arching top tube so step over height is about 80cms. I am 5' 8" tall with 31" inside leg and step over it easily. I ride with the saddle slightly high, about 4" raised up from the top of the seat tube.
Thanks for looking and happy bidding

This is a heavy item, so better collected. I could deliver within reasonable miles radius for cost of petrol.
