Edwardian Mahogany Display Cabinet / Bookcase / Cupboard. Circa 1910
This very good quality display cabinet is a great example of Edwardian craftsmanship, and it was supplied by the quality retailer Allen & Appleyard Artistic Furnishers Liverpool.
The cabinet has fabulous flame mahogany veneers which stand out in such an impressive manner, and the top is fitted with a decorative return which has a wonderfully carved centre piece, while six very elegant feet provide a most pleasing means of support. The front feet have decorative shell motifs carved into them, and the well crafted framework above is nicely detailed in the centre.
The three arched top crossbanded doors form a hugely appealing part of the cabinets design, especially the centre one which has an outstanding pattern of grain, while the end doors are highlighted with decorative glazing bars and neatly carved mouldings which coincide with the return.
A working lock with key is fitted to all three doors, and each well sized mahogany lined compartment is fitted with two shelves. Judging by the additional support brackets on either side of the middle compartment it looks as though it originally had another four shelves fitted, and the top shelf is warped.
The condition is very good, with only minor marks consistent with age to mention, and there is some fading to the right hand side.
The height measures 46 1/2 inches.
The width measures 60 inches.
The depth measures 19 inches.
