Early Victorian Coastal Maritime Townscape Oil Painting

Framed - approx 16 X 24 inches (40.64 X 60.96cm).

This is an excellent European School dating from the Victorian period.

The coastal scene depicts a beautiful and unusual view of a shallow harbour dotted with houses and boats. This is a late evening scene, the detailing of the painting almost executed in silhouette. The painting is possibly European, although we are not entirely certain. A beautiful an initeresting painting. Houses stand on the water's edge, windows glowing from the fires within. The shallow coast is dotted with trees, with masts of sail boats and fishing boats moored in the shallow waters. Three figures in a boat row inland, a further vessel moored where a figure tends to his duties within. To the left a turret or castle stands on the edge of the cliff, almost appearing to be completely out of context to the rest of the work, this being quite typical of the artist's impression of the period. Beyond a beautiful sunset glows beneath dark clouds. A beautiful painting, full of interest and a fine piece from the early to mid 19th Century.

The work is signed "Wallis" to the lower right. The probably dates to around 1840 - 1870.

The work is set off by a frame of gesso work with classic scroll and floral moulded decoration, and finished in gilt. The frame is contemporary to the work. The is mounted on a stretcher.

The is in good general condition but there are a few marks and blemishes consistent with age.The painting does show some signs of crazing however is stable, this only adding to character and authenticity. The painting would benefit from a light clean, although this again adds to the charm and character of the picture. The work measures - approx 16 X 24 inches (40.64 X 60.96cm) when framed. The image measurements are- approx 8 X 15 inches (20.32 X 38.1cm).
