Early 19th Century Telescope
An interesting little hand held telescope fitted with very basic optical system. Eyepiece has only single lens, inverter is fitted with two lenses and object glass is single but may have been double originally. Due to the poor quality of optics during the early 19th century dark stops were fitted as this example very close to the object glass. Main body is black enamelled which has suffered from considerable chipping. Object glass cell has an outer thread which would have secured the lens slide dust cap.
Optically the telescope works correctly, image is fairly sharp but a little milky.
Length closed 170mm
Length open 420mm
Supplied with original vellum carrying case.
