This is an Early 1800s New England Homespun Blue and White Check Linen piece that may have been a handkerchief or worn around a woman's shoulders. It measures 31 1/2" x 32". It is not a fragment as the woven design goes around the whole piece and has very narrow stitched hems along to ends. It was hand spun, hand woven and naturally dyed with indigo, and has that nice soft drape and feel of linen that has been used and used which is what I like to see in early linen. And for those of you who have already handled early handwoven linen can attest to. It has some damage though from use over time even though linen is a very strong fiber. There are two burn holes along one edge, several tan stain areas mostly about the size of a pea, and large water mark stain. The indigo color is nice and soft and mellow typical of New England hand weaving in the 19thC. It is not a perfect piece but early.
