EXOTIC FIG TREE 2 YEARS OLD lge plant

Figs are naturally a mediterranean fruit tree often naturally cropping three time a year. In the UK plant them in the sunniest part of the garden ideally in a fan shape against a south facing wall. Plant the tree in a container or lined hole so that it is about 9 inches away from the wall.

Figs should not be given over rich compost as they will just grow and not produce fruit. Ideally use a soil based compost such as John Innes or just top soil add to this about 10% small rubble bits  or large grit or bits of smashed concrete plus  peat or leaf mold for water retention.

A fig tree reaches maturity in about four years but should carry fruit some from the first year. Watering is absolutely essential throughout the growing season,

In cold areas and north of Yorkshire some frost protection. This can be covering the entire wall trained fan in a loose net cover  and straw packing between the branches. Pot grown figs can simply be  over wintered in a cool light room inside or a sheltered area of the garden.

 Figs don't need polinating to produce fruit in August -September. 

When your fig fruits, why not mix ginger in syrup into greek yoghurt and drizzle over open figs for the ultimate treat, Or figs split onto a bed of salad leaves and parma ham torn over the top with greek yoghurt drizzled over.
