1 - What your Giveaway website will do?
- The Giveaway Website is a customer acquisition business that gives away free products to its customers
- A customer joins the site for free
- When he joins, the the web site automatically creates for the customer his own username, password, account and referral code
- The customer then tries out an offer with one of the affiliates (e.g. he open an account with eBay, or he opens an account with an online bookmaker, etc)
- The customer then gets several friends to do the same
- Once the customer has referred a set number of friends, the business sends him a free product (such as an iPod)
- Unfortunately due to eBay terms and conditions, you cannot sign up as I've had to de-activate the sign up button while the auction is running
2 - How would my Giveaway Website make money from giving things away
- The profits come from when the customer tries out an offer with one of the affiliates
- We run a website using this system, and affiliates pay up between $50-100 for each person customer that we send them
- Some affiliates, such as bingo and poker sites, will even pay us up to $300 per customer
- As you will see from the homepage of our sample site, we require that a customer refer 5 friends in order to get the iPod nano
- Thus we get, at least, $50 for the initial sign up, and then $250 (5 x $50) - giving a total of $300 - before the customer is eligible for his free item
- On Amazon, an iPod nano can be purchased for $142
- Thus subtracting the cost of the free product from the revenue that is generated by the customer, the business makes at least $158 ($300-$142) per customer
- Where, however, the customer and his friends sign up to the more profitable offers that pay up to $300 each (bingo, poker and casino), Our profits are $1658 per customer! ($1800 - $142)

3 - That's only the start of it...
- The profit calculations above are made where the customer actually fulfils all of his referrals and actually gets his required number of referrals
- In many case, however, the customer will never get the required number of referrals to actually get his free product
- Thus a customer will sign up and complete his offer, giving the Giveaway Website, say at least $50, and then refers perhaps 3 friends, giving us another $150... of course, this falls short of the 5 referrals required for the free iPod nano, and thus we make $200 profit without actually having to give anything away
- Also, say a customer is a webmaster who can refer a lot of people to the Giveaway Business... since he can only get the one free item, any extra referrals are pure profits for us... Thus if he refers 20 people we make at least $1000 (20 x $50), and only have to send out the 1 iPod nano, with a net profit of $858 for that customer
4 - So where do the customers come from
- Due to the nature of the Giveaway Business, it practically sells itself with viral marketing done by our customers
- Naturally, once a customer has signed up, he wants to get as many referrals as possible so that he can get his free iPod... so he posts his referral link on the web, on eBay, on Google, to all of his friends on MSN Messenger, and so on
- Like a ripple in a pond, even the smallest number of customers can rapidly multiply. Take a look at this diagram to see just how many customers can be generated from a single sign-up :
- Of course, most customers will be able to refer many more than just 6 friends
- In just a few chains, one customer can generate a thousands more within a matter of days
- The main customer base for the giveaway site is the younger 17-30 age range, those who typically have a lot of free time, many social contacts, and like to get something for nothing
- By way of example, the average university student will have a MSN contact list of around 75-100 people, and this is a particularly fruitful source of custom - a couple of posters around a university campus or some messages on a forum is enough to get the ball rolling
- Also, given the wide appeal of the giveaway business, mass web traffic is also moderately effective in driving custom

How much time do I have to put in to this?
- Firstly, I must emphasise that this is not a get rich quick kind of thing and you're not going to make millions overnight. Remember that this is a business. That said, if you do put in a little work, the rewards can be substantial. You don't have to put in a great deal of time. In fact, your Giveaway Website would be largely automated. When signing up the web site automatically creates a username, account, password, etc. for each new customer. Also, the website will track the offers completed by each user. All we really need to do in running the web site is oversee the advertising, and send out the free items at the end of the month.
How much can I make?
- That really depends upon how much you put in. Personally, when in the past running a similar site I have been making £500 a week, but I have put very little effort into it and don't have the time to manage such a site and send out the free products
- ----> I achieved this using Google Adwords PPC Advertising - this cost me approximately $250 a month, with a return of $4000, giving net profits of $3750 / month
- -----> For those with more time and money to dedicate to advertising, profits can be huge
- I feel that, with a little effort, your Giveaway business has huge potential
- My recommendations would be for the use Google Adwords PPC advertising, since this drives huge numbers of customers
- Also, had I the time I would put posters in local town centres and on university campuses; also you can get some free radio advertising by calling into talk shows; finally I would contact your local newspaper, they might be interested in running a small interest column free of charge
- Given the nature of this site, with customers getting free high value items, the site practically sells itself, and almost all visitors will sign up

- Alternatively, if you have a smaller number of order you can simply use a company such as Amazon and have the free item sent out as a gift to your customer. Again, you never need to actually send the item yourself. Although this method is very slightly more expensive, it is extremely safe and reliable. Plus if you're on the ball, and you join the Amazon affiliate program you can get commission cash-back on your own purchases! :-)

I have had quite a few questions on the ways that I would suggest for marketing this website. To make this clearer for everyone, I had posted my response below:
Google Adwords
- Setting up a Google Adwords account is very easy to do.
- Once this has been done and your account has been authorised, you can create your ads. This is a very simple process and involves no technical skills – just type in your ad and select the key words that you’d like it to be associated with
- There is not a great deal of serious competition so the average bid price on key-words such as ‘free ipods’, ‘free xbox’ ‘free wii’, etc, is relatively low
- The cost of a click is about 10-15p for a high position, and as the marketing is targeted, you can expect a good rate of conversion – you should expect about 1 in 5 visitors to sign up, and about 1 in 20 visitors to complete an offer - using the high paying affiliates (poker, casino, betting, bingo, etc) you can expect a return at an average £30 - so a investment:profit ratio of about 1:15.
- This is a good way to start off, and once you have base customers, the viral marketing effect will provide you with hundreds of customers without any advertising costs
Affiliate marketing
- If you are able to partner yourself with affiliates, they will do promotion for you, and you will only need to pay them when they actually deliver active customers
- The best affiliates are likely to be webmasters with large contact lists, since they will be able to contact thousands of people in a matter of minutes, without the risk of you being accused of spamming
- All you would need to do is create an account on the behalf of each affiliate – this will only take a few minutes and it will generate a unique referral ID; this can be used by the affiliates and the website will track the number and identity of customers who have been referred / completed offers
Local marketing
- I have not tried this method before, but I’m sure that it has great potential…
- I would suggest targeted marketing by way of posters, flyers, etc around local university campuses, since this is the ideal demographic, and students tend to have email contacts numbering several hundred
- Handing out flyers is economical – students will willingly work for £5 an hour, and 5,000 A6 tri-colour leaflets can be printed at the cost of about £50.
Mass mailing
- It is possible to acquire email databases containing several hundred million email addresses – the merits are obvious: a response rate of just 1 in 100,000 could give some 3,000 active customers
- While it is certainly possible to use this method, I would tend to discourage it, since if you are accused of sending spam, you’re hosting company and email provider may send you warnings and ultimately terminate your service
- The best way to go about mass mailing would be to contact webmasters and propose an affiliate arrangement – this way all of your emails would be part of a legitimate opt-in service, and you would have the option of targeting a particular demographic
Mass Traffic
- This method of marketing uses a third party marketing service to deliver massive quantities of traffic to your site
- This is usually done by large companies which place pop-up, expired domain re-directs, etc, all over the web and can have these ads go straight to your website
- The positive side is that you can have many thousands of visitors at very little expense; but you must take into consideration that the visitors are not targeted, and thus many may not be interested in what you have to offer
- That said, as a game of numbers it is reasonable to expect that if you have say 1 million visitors, you need only appeal to 0.001% of you untargeted visitors to get 1000 new customers
- I have not had personal experience with such a substantial amount of traffic in the past, but I have purchased smaller traffic packages (20,000 visitors) and have noticed an increased number of sign-ups – in one case one of the visitors was a Polish webmaster, who signed up and subsequently referred more that 100 new customers!
- This mass traffic method is a bit of a gamble as it depends on whether you have the right customers visiting your site and signing up. That said’ the numbers are certainly on your side. If you have the funds available, it certainly could be a good way to kick-start your business, since it should result in a growing customer based and many incoming links (meaning higher search engine placement)
- As an example, I have seen an advert on eBay offering 1 million English language visitors for the fee of about £75, which is an extremely reasonable price
