After hearing Bloch's fraught and aggressive First Sonata I generally find that I want to hear the tranquilly meditative Second as a sort of 'reply' to it. They make a

satisfying as well as obvious coupling, in short, and Oalperine (who plays them in reverse order, but that can easily be changed) is well aware of the differences of colour

and attack that they need. Aided by a pianist who is as good at big, dramatic gestures as he is at quiet delicacy he gives, on the whole, larger-scaled readings than do

Leonard Friedman and Allan Schiller on ASV. There is more agile strength to Oalperine's and Aguessy's account of the First Sonata's opening movement, for example,

and a wider dynamic range between the opening pages and the impassioned climax of the central mo/to quieto. I like their ardour, too, in the Poème mystique, and their

confident building of this long, single movement into a convincing whole.

Adda's idiosyncratic recording is less appealing. It places the piano somewhat backwardly, giving it a rather blurred swimminess. The violin sound lacks a touch of

warmth, too, and here ASV is much kinder to the music; Friedman's tone is smaller than Oalperine's but a better balance and a more sympathetic acoustic reduces any

sense of skinniness. I suspect, too, that I could live longer with Friedman and Schiller's thoughtfully detailed Bloch than with Galperine and Aguessy's affectionate but

more generalized performances; they are attractive but a little undercharacterized. Friedman and Schiller also offer a substantial bonus (Bloch's Baal shem suite), so the

choice for anyone wanting both sonatas seems pretty clear. M.E.O
