We are delighted to offer for auction this large oil on canvas by the artist EDWARD F. D. PRITCHARD, 1809-1905, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1881. The painting depicts a view of a Highland river, gushing over rocks into a waterfall, with a backdrop of mountains. The artist has used a palette knife to create this slightly impressionistic painting highlighted with a large amount of scratching out, probably with the end of his brush, to create more texture.
EDWARD PRITCHARD was a landscape, marine and architectural painter, who lived in Bristol, London and finally in Bournemouth, who exhibited from 1852-1884. He principally painted in oils. According to Graves Dictionary, he exhibited 7 works at the Royal Academy, 18 at the British Institution, 8 at Suffolk Street and 1 elsewhere. He also exhibited 1 painting at the Dudley Gallery in 1884. Biographical listing for this artist may be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists.
