Many of the products are hand-carved in wood. Most are original creations by individual craftsmen and women - while others are the products of family co-operatives and small village-based cottage industries. A lot of  items are purely decorative or domestic in nature, but some are traditional or ritual artifacts deeply rooted in local culture. The fair trade policy means the artist or craftsmen are commissioned and the money goes straight to the source. Our suppliers visit the different regions and have become good friends with many of the craftsmen. They also make sure 50% of the money is given first enabling the craftsperson to buy in materials and tools needed and pay immediately on completion.Every effort is made to ensure that all carved items are made from sustainable cultivated timber, and that non-fade child-safe acrylics are used on painted products.  My importer has  worked with some of the people for 20 years. None of the products are made by children. They are members of BAFTS the British Association of Fair Trade Shops, and a certified BAFTS importer and supplier.
