Description

 Silver sixpence dated 1811 of the 'Shaftesbury Bank'.

Obverse :  Arms of the town of Shaftesbury..    Reverse : 'DORSETSHIRE, WILTSHIRE AND SHAFTESBURY BANK TOKEN, VALUE SIXPENCE'.

This token was supposedly issued by the Shaftesbury Bank and current in the areas named on the reverse of the token. The piece was very probably made by the enigmatic Henry Morgan of Rathbone Place, London who marketed silver tokens to those customers who were in need of small change due to the outflow of silver to the Continent to pay for grain after the poor harvests of 1809 and 1810 and to support Wellington's Peninsular campaign.
