Adds a new dimension for trains that are used on track, all mine have lights, it may not be like real life but I think it looks good especially with DCC . I wouldn't expect any one to make alterations to exhibit models but personally I think trains have motors in them so should be used on tracks, you can add White LED's without damaging Diesels , the easiest way is to light up the cab which normally doesn't involve any drilling or damage, great with DCC as you can see when stopped which way it will go when forward power is applied

LED's don't get HOT but resistors may do so so don't cover them up

Great for DCC lights can be switched off if required

Great for DC but only come on when power applied  also depends on which way wired.
