I have for sale a genuine Deed from 1862
This is an acknowledgment of deeds by married women under the fines and recoveries act of 1833
At this time when a woman married, any property she owned automatically passed to her husband. If he wanted to sell such property, under common law his wife had to be part of the process, or to consent. This was seen to prevent the husband abusing his position as owner of property gained through marriage. The document was to show that the wife was of full age and understood the proceedings and agreed to the sale without being forced to
The need for such certificates was ended by the Married Womens Property Act of 1882. This gave them the same rights as single or widowed women
This particular deed was agreed by Bridget Round wife of Charles Edouard Temblaire, Gentleman residing in Paris, regarding property in the Parish of Iver in the County of Buckinghamshire
The Commissioners appointed by Sir William Erle were James Shirley Leakey, Robert Maugham and William Arthur all of Paris France. This is shown on separate piece of paper signed by Sir William Erle
Others mentioned are Whinfield Stephen Round Anne La Marquise De Montauban Stephana Walker Edward Walker and his wife Ann Whinfield John Deacon The right Honourable Alexander Leslie Manville, commonly called Viscount Kirkaldie
The affidavit was taken by James Shirley Leakey of 6 Rue Castellane in the city of Paris and William Arthur, commission agent of 236 Rue De Rivoli Paris
