This dictionary remains the most comprehensive and accurate lexicon available.

The language of the Dakota Sioux Indian people was first put into written form by missionaries who lived within and learned from the Dakota community in the Minnesota River valley. Stephen R. Riggs (1812-83) worked with Samuel and Gideon Pond and Dr. Thomas S. Williamson to create a Dakota-English dictionary as well as prayer books and hymnals. All four men were missionaries sent by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to work among the Dakota of the Minnesota River valley.

The dictionary was first published by the Smithsonian Institute in 1852. This edition returns to print an expanded version of the dictionary published in 1890. (665 pages) Softcover

International shipment will be shipped via USPS. All of our orders will be shipped by USPS from our warehouse usually within 1 business days (Monday - Friday). It has been our experience that most package arrive at international destinations in a timely manner but because of variations in the local Customs Policies of different countries, packages can sometimes take up to 30 days for delivery.

We send all International packages with "Delivery Confirmation" (when available) or a "Certificate of Mailing" to countries that do not offer Delivery Confirmation verification to the USPS.
