None, however, is likely to be as grueling as the fight she experienced recently off Destin, Florida with a massive broadbill swordfish. Olander landed the 363-pound broadbill on a Daiwa MP3000 Power Assist Reel and matching Dendoh™ Style rod, after an epic contest lasting more than seven hours. The 28-year-old Florida native hooked her monster swordfish – the second largest ever taken on rod and reel in the Northern Gulf – while fishing aboard Capt. Donnie Brown’s 55-foot Hatteras, Sea Ya, approximately 63 miles off Destin. “We were drift-fishing over a 1,200-foot drop-off known as ‘The Spur’ when the fish hit a dead mackerel soaking on a circle hook about 60 feet down” said Brown.” I knew this broadbill had shoulders, but I didn’t realize just how big it was until it jumped off our stern about an hour into the fight,” he added. “We hooked it at 3:30 a.m., and it didn’t come to gaff until 11 a.m.” After boating the swordfish, Brown headed to Destin’s Harbor Walk Marina, where the catch was officially weighed before an awe-struck crowd of onlookers. In taking on this trophy-sized broadbill, Olander, a marathon runner, had youth and fitness on her side. She also hooked the beast on the right tackle. Her Daiwa MP3000 Power Assist reel was spooled up with 150-pound Daiwa Dendoh™ Braid and matched to a Saltiga® SA-B 56HF-DD Dendoh Style Rod – a combination capable of overpowering just about any oversized pelagic. The largest of Daiwa’s Dendoh Style power assist reels, the MP3000 puts incredible torque and cranking power at the user’s fingertips. While the MP3000 can be cranked manually, the angler has the option of instantly turning this unique, 12-volt reel into an automatic fish-catching “super winch” with the push of a lever. The MP3000’smooth, multi-disc sealed drag is also specially designed to handle the extended runs of large, powerful game fish. Olander’s impressive 363-pound broadbill isn’t the only behemoth that has succumbed to Daiwa’s Dendoh Power Assist tackle since its introduction last year. On May 5, 2006, an angler in Okinawa, Japan landed a giant bluefin tuna that tipped the scales at 600 pounds – also on a Daiwa MP3000 Reel and Dendoh Style Rod.
