John & Margaret Cannon
Dye Plants and Dyeing
In Association With
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

John & Margaret Cannon are real experts. John was formerly the Keeper of Botany, at the Natural History Museum, London, until 1990, while Margaret was a botanical researcher, at the same museum. She now specialises in dyeing, spinning, & weaving.

  • The first part of the book explains how to dye different fibres, using plants & there is helpful advice on mordants.
  • Most well known dye plants are included, among them elderberry, henna, saffron, weld, indigo, woad & madder...
  • The main body of the book consists of a double page spread on each plant. One side features a full-page, painted illustration of the plant, with colours that the plant can yield, using different mordants. The opposite page has a full description of the plant, its dye history & the best way to use it for dying.
  • This book will encourage you to experiment & see for yourself, the wonderful colours provided by nature.
  • Over 120 pages packed with useful information & wonderful botanical illustrations.
  • Well written & easy to read.
  • Condition is excellent - almost like new. This book has seen very little handling but is not sold as mint. There is a tiny light dog-ear to the bottom of the front cover, which is not noticeable under normal viewing.
  • This auction is for one book.
  • Paperback, published in 1994, by Herbert Press.
  • Size approx. 7½" x 9½" (18.5cm x 25cm).

Bidding starts from just 1p.
