Het is alweer bijna 30 jaar geleden dat 'Dagboek van een Herdershond' op de Nederlandse televisie verscheen. Zo'n 6.5 miljoen mensen bleven er voor thuis. De reden van dit succes? Waarschijnlijk een heel herkenbaar stuk verleden van een specifieke streek in Nederland: het Limburg aan het begin van de vorige eeuw.
In 1914 fietste de jonge kapelaan Erik Odekerke zijn eerste parochieplaats Geleen binnen. Het kleine landbouwdorp wordt beheerst door een kleine groep notabelen, de onderwijzer, een herenboer en meneer pastoor. De jonge kapelaan is erg onhandig en naïef en jaagt, ondanks zijn goede bedoelingen, veel mensen tegen zich in het harnas. Niet in de laatste plaats de conservatieve pastoor, die zichzelf als de herder van de kudde beschouwt. Wat hem betreft is de kapelaan slechts zijn herdershond. Gelukkig staat Erik er niet helemaal alleen voor. Hij laat zich leiden door een onzichtbare engelbewaarder waar hij overigens vaak ruzie mee heeft. En dat leidt weer tot komische situaties.
