Published in the U.K. as a 4th Edition Paperback by PAN BOOKS in 1955.
A used and read copy, with the pages very tight and clean, tho` some browning. In the early hours of 30 April 1943, a corpse, wearing the uniform of an officer in the Royal Marines, was slipped into the waters off the south-west coast of Spain. With it was a briefcase, in which were papers detailing an imminent Allied invasion of Greece. It was perhaps the most decisive bluff of all time, for the Allies had no such plan: the purpose of 'Operation Mincemeat' was to blind the German High Command to their true objective - an attack on Southern Europe through Italy. Though officially shrouded in secret, the operation soon became legendary. It gave rise to two very different books. Duff Cooper's Operation Heartbreak, a romantic tale, one which the government attempted to suppress. Its publication prompted the intelligence services to pressurize the operation's mastermind, Ewen Montagu, into writing a factual account, The Man Who Never Was.
Operation Heartbreak created a sensation on its first appearance. At the instance of "high authority" an attempt was made to have the book withdrawn before publication. But it was not until 1953 that the reason for the excitement became clear; the facts about one of the most astounding secretsof the War were at last revealed, and gave support to the impression that this novel had been based on knowledge of the episode. William Maryngton has one desire, to fight for his country, but circumstances play trick after trick on him, he is tto young to fight in WW1 and too old to fight in WW2. Weary of aimless peacetime soldiering, unsuccessful in love and cheated of his life's ambition, he seemed to have come in every sense of the phrase, to a hopeless dead end.But fate has one more surprise for Willie, and the end of the operatin is compact of irony and pathos. A nice older copy of a U.K. PAN Paperback - for the reader or collector.
