This is a trade ad poster from the Kinema-Collection library. An archive specializing in vintage film images serving world wide media. The core of which comprises an almost complete run of British film trade publications from the 1920s through to the 1970s. the only such run known to exist outside a few public institutions. The archive was originated in the mid 1980s on the discovery in a west country disused Cinema of this historic film treasure trove. The original owner of the cinema had painstakingly kept intact, every trade publication over a period of 45 years in mint condition. The larger size of the two British journals (they were approximately 3 times the size of their Hollywood rivals) made the lavish and sophisticated adds ideal material for advance lobby publicity. Precise designs for poster frames to house them were regularly published. in the film trade journals from which they came.

Trade adds are colourful poster style film advertisements aimed at cinema managers ,either slipped in or part of the weekly film trade journal which was available by subscription to Cinema managers only and not sold to the general public( ie do not confuse with adverts from fan magazines ) I use the term Trade Add Posters as the journal would publish designs for frames which allowed them to exhibit the adds in cinemas AN ILLUSTRATIONOF ONE OF THE FRAMES IS ON OUR CURRENT SALE OF CAPTAIN BLOOD the artwork is often finer and paper used better than theatrical posters .The large size ones being about the size of US 1/2 sheets posters. Most have the date in tiny letters to top corner . The large and medium wide have a centre fold which is usually hard to discern when flat. Most were designed to be slipped out, some attached by two staples which where tiny, will denote with SH , if there is wear will describe above. Some of the rarer titles have sold for four figure sums at Christies and Sotheby’s Uk and my feedback tends to be pretty positive , Following example email from recent sale of K.Hepburn Trade add Posters “I received the LITTLE WOMEN and SYLVIA SCARLETT trade ads in the mail today. I must say that even with your very detailed description of these items, I still wasn't entirely sure what I was buying when I bid on them. But the photos of them on eBay - added to the fact that they were original items, which I'm a stickler for - intrigued me enough to bid on them. Having now received them, I'm SO happy I did. I'm a HUGE Hepburn fan and they are WONDERFUL and unlike any American trade ads that I have in my collection. I absolutely love them and have left 2 separate glowing feedbacks for you. I see that you are currently listing another one of these ads from STAGE DOOR. I plan to bid on that one as well. And I'd love to hear from you if you come across anything from Hepburn films.

These images are extremely rare if not unique. See

‘THE LOST ARTWORK OF HOLLYWOOD’ FRED E BASTEN, WATSON-GUPTILL PUBLICATIONS, 1996.

The publishers own copies from the 1930’s were destroyed by fire and water damage during the Blitz. Wartime paper drives decimated those held by cinemas. The large size trade adds of the 1930s and early 40s approximate in size to an American half-sheet though the paper is of a superior quality. Large size is 56cm x 43cm/ 22"x 17". Medium size is 43cm x 43cm, 17" x 11".

Shipping will be in crush proof tubes at cost to lucky winner.

These images will be available via e-bay over the next year.

As a guide to recent values achieved at auction our "Lost Horizon" large size realized $1656 at Christie’s South Ken. in March 96. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" medium size realized $700 at Sotherby’s UK in May 99. OUR TOP HITS ON E.BAY LAST YEAR WERE THREE STOOGES "YOU NAZTY SPY "$1,729.96 AND " KID GALAHAD" $545.93.
