EDWARD HASTINGS
was born in Alnwick and educated at Bamburgh. he studied under the patronage of the Archdeacon of Northumberland, and became a successful artist both in landscape and portraiture, exhibiting at theR.A. (47), the British Institute(11), the Society of British Artists (9), the old Watercolour Society and in Newcastle between 1804 and 1847.He was based in London and Durham. His works were engraved by J.Collyer, L. Corbaux, C.Turner and T. Woolnoth.
This pencil drawing is from the 1811 sketchbook of Hastings. The drawings in the book cover areas of London which at the time were still recognisable as separate villeges or small towns away from the city. They are thus most uncommon and portray places which have since vanished or have been subsumed in suburbia. It is thus an opportunity to purchase extremely rare records of those times, some worthy of display in local museums. The most frequently sketched areas are Kentish Town,Hampstead, Dulwich and Putney, including a view of the toll gateway on Putney Bridge. There are a few scenes outside London, and two pencil portraits. Almost all are signed in full and dated. Some have a light wash over the pencil work. The condition is generally sound, though there is some pages show age staining and damp marking which would beneft from professional attention. All are lightly mounted under card.
This particular drawing shows a view of St. Paul's Cathedral across the buildings from Kentish Town. The view has a slight wash. The condition is sound with slight damp staining . It is signed and dated 3rd July 1811.The size is 6.5" x 9".
