Sketches By 'Boz' - 1st Series 1st Edition 1836 Two Volumes in Original Cloth
(Dickens, Charles)

Book Description: John MacRone, London, 1836. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Cruikshank, George (illustrator). First Edition. 8vo - 8 Inches. A tidy, sound set of the first edition, first printing of the first series, bound in original green textured cloth with gilt spine titles. Both volumes housed in a later green cloth slipcase. Both volumes have been recased and rebacked. Vol retains all but a few millimetres of the original backstrip. Vol II retains the top 2/3 of the backstrip. Some minor wear to corners. Contemporary ink name 'Lambert' with date of 1836 to each free front endpaper. Yellow endpapers. Preface in Vol I dated February 1836. viii, 348 ; (4), 342 pages. 16 plates including frontispieces. Collated complete. Whiting given as name of printer to title page verso. No mention of Dickens on the title page. Later printings removed Cruikshank's name in favour of Dickens. Short close tear of 1 inch to margin of one plate in Vol II. Occasional foxing spot. Plates tidy if slightly greying. Frontispiece of Vol II with original tissueguard. Overall a very original set of this rare Dickens work.
