Recently culled from a historic Northeastern United States excavation. This dark green squat soda bottle is embossed with only "TWITCHELL" and "PHILADA" and is the uncommon variant ---the vast majority of these bottles did not include the capital "T" mongram and many versions were only embossed on a single side.
Note the sloppy, irregularly applied top --- prominent tooling marks, lots of wrinkles and so forth ---this is what hand-blown glass is all about; lending this piece strong character. The mold seams provide a clear indication of having been hand-blown into a two-piece mold and the base is smooth, it probably just missed the pontil rod. Probably from the late 1860s or early 1870s.
Measures about 7.5" high. Presented in 'as found' condition; interior does show content residue and exterior shows typical light wear consisting of light scuffs (abrasions and so forth; flea bites here and there) that we considerable negligible and easily dismissed. An evening spent in the tumbler will allow this jewel to truly shine! No chips, cracks, dings or bruises.
A very attractive addition to the discriminating enthusiast's permanent collection. Probably held beer or soda at one time; or possibly mineral water.
