BBC MUSIC GUIDES

DEBUSSY ORCHESTRAL MUSIC

David COX

Highly recommended for GCSE, 'A' level and Further Educational Students.

Debussy was the first great revolutionary in twentieth-century music, and exercised a far-reaching influence on succeeding generations. The full impact of his new idiom comes across most clearly and explicitly in his orchestral works. In this BBC Music Guide David Cox surveys not only Debussy's better-known orchestral works, such as the Prelude a L 'Apres-midi d 'un Faune, the Nocturnes, and La Mer, but all his compositions for orchestra - or ones which he subsequently orchestrated.

David Cox was, until 1974, a member of the BBC music staff and was responsible for all music programmes in the External Services. Besides being a writer on music, he is a composer, pianist and broadcaster.

BBC Music Guides are a series of monographs each dealing with one aspect of a composer's work. They are planned to give the layman an overall view of the subject, showing how particular works came to be written, their significance in the general history of the genre, and how the form was developed by the composer. There are detailed examinations of important works or movements, with musical examples.

The series was originated by Gerald Abraham, and has been edited subsequently by Lionel Salter and Robert Layton.

For other titles in the series see inside.

(Highly recommended to musicians active and passive alike.)

They are short, not too technical, and admirably clear in layout, with plenty of relevant music examples. You need scores, or gramophone records, to get full value, but don't be put off by this : it's precisely because they help the layman to delve painlessly beneath the surface that semi-technical books of this kind are so valuable' - Observer

Condition: (64 pages) Bought new but un-used. Natural age discolouration due to storage but does not detract from the clarity of the print. Some fading on the front cover, as seen in picture.
