Insectivorous Plants - Fine Presentation Copy with 'From the Author' to Half Title
Darwin, Charles

Book Description: John Murray, London, 1875. Cloth. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 8vo - 7.5 Inches. An important presentation copy with the half title inscribed 'From the Author' in ink by a Murray's clerk. To the top of the title in ink is 'Anton Dohrn 1875'. Dohrn was introduced to Darwin's work by Ernst Haeckel and quickly became one of Darwin's most fervent supporters. Together with his colleague Nicholai Miklukho-Maklai he planned a global network of zoological research stations, opening his first station, the Stazione Zoologica in Naples in 1873. In this new station he introduced a new funding system through renting out laboratory space to visiting scientists. This ensured the financial success of the institution, which continues to this day. This volume comes from the Stazione Zoologica library. Bound in original dark green blindstamped cloth with gilt spine titles. Some minor wear to corners. Some fraying to spine with slight loss of cloth to foot. Lower joint splitting. Unrestored. Brown endpapers with discrete number label in ink to front pastedown. Some foxing mainly to first and last few leaves. Otherwise internally very clean. x, 462 pages. Collated complete. An important presentation copy, inscribed as usual by a Murray's clerk, to one of the leading German Darwinists of the time.
