COMICS GRADING/CONDITION
I buy a lot of comics on Ebay and, quite often, will be disappointed when I receive my purchase only to find that, where the seller described it as something like "excellent condition in view of its age", it is only VG grade or even only fit for the bin! A lot of sellers use grading terms like "FN" and "VF" to describe the condition of their comics without understanding what these terms mean, even though they are pretty much standard terms in the comic collector's world.
I grade my comics according to the OVERSTREET COMIC BOOK GRADING GUIDE. An explanation of the grades used is summarised below.
NM/MT Near Mint/Mint (9.8)
Nearly perfect in every way with only minor imperfections. The overall look is "as if it was just purchased".
NM Near Mint (9.4)
Nearly perfect with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. The overall look is "as if it was just purchased and read once or twice".
Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. No creases. No soiling, staining or other discolouration apart from slight foxing. Spine tight and flat, no spine roll or split allowed. No staple tears, almost no stress lines. No rust migration. Paper is cream to off-white, supple and fresh. Centrefold is secure. Slight interior tears are allowed.
Comics published before 1970 in NEAR MINT condition are scarce.
VF/NM Very Fine/Near Mint (9.0)
Limited number of defects. No creasing of cover allowed. No spine roll or spine split allowed. Slightest of staple tears are allowed. A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are almost imperceptible.
VF Very Fine (8.0)
An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. Sharp, bright and clean with supple pages. A comic book in this grade has the appearance of having been carefully handled.
Most of the cover gloss retained with minor wear appearing at corners and around edges. Up to 0.25" crease allowed with no colour break. Spine tight and almost flat with no roll. Paper is tan to cream and supple. Centrefold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
FN Fine 6.0
An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Minor wear apparent, with minor or moderate creases. Blunted or abraded corners are more common, as is minor staining or discolouration. Cover gloss reduced but still clean, pages tan/brown but still supple (not brittle). Minor spine roll allowed and up to 0.25" spine split or colour break. Centrefold may be loose but not detached.
VG Very Good (4.0)
The average used comic book. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Moderate spine roll and/or up to 1" spine split. Centrefold may be loose or detached at one staple, but not both.
GD Good (2.0)
This grade shows substantial wear. Comics in this grade have all pages and covers present, although there may be small pieces missing. Cover shows significant wear and may even be detached. The largest piece allowed missing from the front or back cover is a 1/2" triangle or 1/4" square. Book-length creases and dimples may be present. May have spine roll or up to 2" spine split. Centrefold may be loose or detached. Moderate interior tears may be present. Could have minor tape repairs but otherwise complete.
