These cases are hard plastic with a secure no fumble latch. When you are stream side and want the box open, even with cold and wet hands, the latch has been designed to open on demand. Latch features a hinge, so after opening and closing thousands of times it wont weaken and break.
Case measures 7 ½ inches long, 4 ½ inches wide, and 1 ¾ inches thick. For our International friends that is about 190 mm x 114 mm x 44 mm. The case features a full length hinge on the back side. When closed and latched the case is sealed by a high profile O ring. If the case slips out of your fly vest it will float right on down to the next beaver dam where you can recover it. Just to make sure the case is water tight I sent a couple over Profile Falls and fished them out of the pool at the bottom. Perfect seal!
Let's take a look inside the case. How many of you folks have the foam fly boxes? The ones where you stick the fly into the foam, and after a couple of seasons it looks like a pin cushion, chips are missing from the foam, and the flies start falling out because there isn't anything left to hold them. Let's face it, if you keep sticking barbs in anything it's going to get torn from pulling the hooks out.
Yes, we addressed that! The closed cell foam is slotted so you simply press the hook down for a firm hold, and lift it straight up or back it out without tearing your foam apart.
Now if you take more than 175 flies stream side you'll have to get a couple of these as each one will hold one hundred and seventy five. For the anglers with tandem streamers these boxes are a dream come true. The spacing is just right to contain BOTH hooks. Just imagine not having to untangle those long ones while trolling anymore. Of course this will cut down on the number of streamers you can fit in one case, but then at the Bear's Den price you can easily get a home for the remaining ties.
And which flies are in what box? You knew we were going to cover that too. ¼ inch wide channels on top and bottom of the case. You can use label tape with one of those label makers, or use the white out marker to identify the contents of each case. The channels are just deep enough to stop the chaffing and rubbing that would wear off your identity.
Now you can pay $30 to $50 for a fly box like this. But why would you want to. We all get them from the same place. The difference is, we don't have a 500,000 square foot building to support, and we don't have 300 people on the payroll. Shipping costs from over seas are, well let's just say they are horrific. So we buy in bulk to keep the prices down and pass those savings on to you, our valued customer.
Keep in mind, when you are buying by name brand you are paying for that name. We've found little reward in paying 3 to 4 times what an item is worth to promote someone else's fortune.
If your flies are organized, dry, and ready to go when you are, and you got a good value for your dollar, then we think you are ahead of the average bear!
