Cumberland, WHITEHAVEN Harbour c.1650s



Description

Crude brass token of the Whitehave , issued with a relevence to the harbour somwhere between 1650 and 1750.

Obverse : 'WHITE HAVEN'  Reverse : 'HAR BOUR.

This piece is something of an enigma although, undoubtedly it is something to do with the harbour at Whitehaven.

Davis & Waters first ascribed the piece as mid 17th. century although there is evidence that it may be more accurately dated a hundred years later. 

Furguson described the mid 17th. c. token as being given to ships which, on visiting the port, had to pay their harbour dues and was given up as a pass thus allowing them to leave.

There is a smaller sized variety which suggests the tokens had value and another theory conjects that they were tallies for either a cart load of ballast (large) or a packhorse of ballast (small) delivered to the harbour when the North Wall of the harbour was being  built in 1766*
