Cranberry has long been known as a natural preventative for uncomfortable, and often painful bladder infections.  Research shows that cranberries contain compounds that reduce the ability of bacteria to stick to the lining of the bladder, thus preventing infections.  Most cranberry juice is mixed with water and sugars and does not provide an adequate amount of the cranberries active compound.  Cranberries contain a group of polyphenols called "proanthocyanadins" that inhibit the adhesion of harmful micro-organisms to the bladder, this making it a less hospitable place for bacteria to breed.
There is now clinical evidence that supports this.  In a recent study by Harvard Medical School, researchers found that in a group of 153 women (average age of 78) those participants who had a regular intake of cranberry juice had 58% less chance of developing a bladder infection.
Cranberry helps maintain health of the urinary system and bladder, particularly against organisms such as Escherichia coli and as a natural remedy for cystitis.
