Saint Augustine lived from 354 A.D. to 430 A.D. This collectible, vintage/antique book, Confessions of Saint Augustine, published by Peter Pauper Press, Mount Vernon, NY. First translated by E. B. Pusey, D. D., in 1838. Illustrated by Valenti Angelo. Hardback, 230 pages. Cannot find a current publishers date, though it is definitely an old publication, appears based on paper type, print style to be from the possible 1920's, could be earlier or a bit later, but definitely a vintage collectible or possible antique.
The Confession is made up of 10 books. Inside page has the original owners name, from St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, written in calligraphy. Inside says: St. Augustine (Aurelius Augustinus) was born in 354 A.D. at Thagaste in Numidia. His father was a pagan, his mother Monnica was a devout Christian, and had a definite and lasting influence on her son. Augustine studied and taught rhetoric at Thagaste, then became a teacher at the University of Carthage, at Rome, and at Milan. While at Carthage, he embraced the doctrine of the Manichaeans; but under the later influence of Bishop Ambrose in Milan, and after a long emotional and intellectual struggle, he was received into the Christian Church in 387. He then became Bishop of Hippo, a post he retained until his death in 430.
Augustine was a prolific writer of letters, philosophical treatises and discussions, diatribes against heritics, and on methods of Christian education; next to his Confessions, the City of God is his best-known work. The Confessions was written in 397 in thirteen books, of which the last three, a theological commentary on the first chapter of Genesis, are not printed in this book. The present excellent translation by E. B. Pusey was based on an earlier English translation, and was first published in 1838.
Book is in excellent condition, has a plastic clear cover protecting the hardback cover. Immediately inside the hardback front cover, the paper has split front the binding, which can be seen in the accompanying photo. That is the only damage I can find. A couple spots on the last page facing the back cover. Otherwise clean and in great shape. See accompanying photos.
