Originally manufactured in 1980 by PYE, Airdre
This is the rare touch tone version of the GPO 746 telephone (these don't come on Ebay very often compared to the touch tone Trimphones) and has the much sought after * and # keys, so it can be used for telephone banking etc. The advantage of one of these is that they are less temperamental than Trimphones and most parts are the same as the 746 dial phone.
This telephone originally had a very badly scratched and faded two-tone grey case/handset, but has been rebuilt with original case/handset mouldings and handset cord. Note that this telephone has NOT been painted; the bezel that surrounds the press buttons is a new reproduction item moulded in blue plastic.
An electronic 21A microphone is fitted so clear speech with no crackling on the line, along with a genuine line cord with BT plug and a bell coil resistor to ensure it is compatible with the modern BT network. The recall button has been deleted as these days it is not used. The telephone has the classic twin gong ringer too.
The plastics are good condition with no fade at all. Unfortunately the press buttons have faded to a cream colour from white and some of the paint has come away from the metal base, leading to some slight surface rust (see the photos), however these imperfection do not detract.
A genuine blank Wellingborough number label is also fitted.
A super cool and very exclusive retro telephone with lots of character which would look good at home or at work. I guarantee that there won't be another one exactly like this, not for a long time if ever.
