Yes we ussually sell guitars, but in an earlier live we worked in the Antique business. So it is not compeletely out of our leak: What we offer here is -what we believe quite Unique: A complete Set of Japanese Meiji furniture, holding 4 Chairs, a Table, 1 Cabinet and a beautiful 2 piece Desk. Formerly this set belonged to a Dutch aristrocatic family, a family of Ambassadors and Consuls. One of their ancestors was representing the Dutch Government as Ambassodor for Japan. We found an old negative in one of the drawers of the Cabinet picturing a western lady in a Japanese-style garden somewhere between 1900-1925. The set and its history perfectly fit into the history of the history of Japanes Meiji Furniture.
The cabinet shows a Bamboo embossed back board, and bears its original crown. Finish and condition are original and the condition is excellent. The quality of the woodcarvings is very high. All the Glass panels are the original Hand-made 1900s glass.
The desk shows a beautiful black shellacked finish, beautifully done in the best Japanese tradition. The upper part is finished in original natural shellac. The quality and age of the black finish makes us believe this work might have been done in Japan. Both are in excellent condition.
The table is in excellent condition and shows a beautiful patina on top.
The chairs are extensively carved and in good condition but need a little work, two of them show repaired cracks and finish repairs, two show cracks that reopened. Except for little work to the chairs, the set is in wonderful original Condition.
Carved furniture emerged only as a consequence of Westernization in Japan, Carved furniture started to be produced more commonly around the 1880s. With the Westernization of Japan came the Ambassadors and that’s where this sets perfectly fits in because this set formerly belonged to the Embassy for the Netherlands in Japan and was taken back to the Netherlands by one of the former Ambassador’s likely when the Situation between western Country's and Japan began to get Tensed.
Japanese Meiji furniture was luxurious and highly elaborate. These pieces, which were initially produced for domestic use, soon found their way to the export market and world exhibitions and are nowsought after collector pieces. To our knowledge a complete set like this has never been offered before.
Condition
This unique set of Natural wood Japanese Meiji furniture (Photo's Below) is in overall very good to excellent condition. The different furniture shows normal flaws and minor wear. No apparent restorations or repairs except for the chairs. One small 2 inch chip of the cabinet is missing. This Unique set of furniture is sold as is. (See photos.) If you need more detailed pictures please ask and we will provide it to your email adress. The Bureau may be refinished, but is to our believe original.
