Coal to anthracite machine old photo 20's


Turn bituminous coal into anthracite. A plant for the conversion of mid-continent bituminous coal into a high grade anthracite on a large commercial scale, solving a problem which scientists have been working for years and promising a new era in fuel, with smokeless mid-western cities, was opened recently by Thomas Hitchcock, Jr. , international polo player of New York, and C.E. Poyer, grand-nephew of Thomas A. Edison. In converting the coal, the process, developped after eight years of experimentation, is said to duplicate in a few hours that which in nature required millions of years. It is the long-sought low-temperature carbonization process, which while it produces a high-grade, smokeless fuel for domestic use at a retail cost $3 less a ton that mined anthracite, yeilds in addition two to three times the quantity of tar produced by high temperature carbonization and large quantities of gas of high heat value.
