This is a group of broken bronze Manillas or Slave Tokens which were recovered from the wreck of the schooner Duoro which hit Round Rock and sunk in the Isles of Scilly in 1843. They come complete with a cetificate signed by the salvors .

These are  an original shipwreck Manillas or  slave tokens that come with an original certificate signed by the salvors.   'Manilla' The trade in Slaves had been going on for many years and brought great wealth, especially to England. This was an illegal ship as this was after the Act which abolished the trade in the UK??The local Chiefs on the Slave Coast of West Africa traded their human cargo for many different commodities and the Manilla was one of them. They were manufactured in Birmingham between 1830-50, shipped out to Benin on the Slave Coast of Africa and bartered for one slave each Manilla. These unfortunates were then packed into the holds of ships and taken to the West Indies, usually making vast profits, if the slaves did not die on the journey.". The Duoro was one of these slave ships on her way to Africa to pick up her human cargo . Fortunately she hit the rocks of Scilly which presumably saved just a few people going into slvery or in fact being killed on the journey??
