Chrysanthemum maximum “Crazy Daisy”

Leucanthemum x superbum,
Double Shasta Daisy

Packet containing 60mg
Average contents 50 seeds
Hardy Perennial

Blooms:           Midsummer to Late Autumn
Height:             60-75cm (24-30in)
Spacing:          45-60cm (18-24in)
Position:          Full Sun to Partial Shade
Germination:   14 to 21 days

This beautiful daisy is a newer version of the much-loved Shasta Daisy, It is one of the first medium tall varieties with the classic 5-8cm (2-3in) white flower with a yellow eye, however many of the flowers have quill like petals giving Crazy Daisy a fluffy appearance.

Shasta Daisies are unsurpassed in the border and for cutting. With multiple flowers per stem, the cheery flowers begin to appear in late spring and continue on for several months if deadheaded, until the cooler weather of autumn begins.

Great for the border or bouquets. Shasta’s mix so effortlessly with other perennials that no garden should be without them!

Sowing:            Sow late winter to early summer (March to June) or in late summer to autumn (August to October)

Sow indoors in pots or trays containing a peaty compost mix at 15-20*C (60-68*F). “Just cover” the seed with vermiculite or sieved compost, as the seed needs light to germinate. The compost should be kept moist but not wet at all times. Germination should occur between 21 -28 days.
If there is no or low germination, move to a cold area at 4*C (39*F) for two to four weeks, then bring out. This will simulate the seeds going through a winter and more germination will occur after this period of “warm-cold-warm”

Thin (prick out) to 7.5cm (3in) pots when seedlings have developed 2 proper leaves and are large enough to handle. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out. Space 60cm (24in) apart.

Cultivation:
Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Good drainage is essential. Wet soils in winter can be fatal.
Tolerates some light shade, particularly in hot summer climates.

Aftercare:
Remove spent flower heads to promote additional bloom.
In spring, remove all dead foliage and cut back to basal foliage in autumn.
Cuttings can be done in summer and division can be done in the spring and is recommended every 2-3 years to maintain vigour. Fertilise with a water soluble fertiliser.

Plant Uses:
Cottage/Informal Garden, Borders and Beds, Wildlife Gardens, Cut Flowers

Good Companions:
Coreopsis, Dianthus, Balloon Flower, Catmint, Daylily, Siberian Iris, Lupine, Garden Phlox, Sedum, Delphinium and Grasses
