Dragon and Phoenix – an exquisite hand made Chinese paper cut measuring 12.5 inches (32cm) in diameter.

Paper cutting is amongst China’s oldest art forms and its history can be traced back thousands of years.  For a long period all Chinese girls were expected to practice the art and their skill in reproducing the exacting lines and ingenious patterns would be one factor in assessing their suitability as a wife.

 

A finished paper cut is one continuous piece where the cut away sections allow for a variety of backing and mounting options (this paper cut is shown against a white background for display purposes).  Paper cuts are hand made using multiple sheets of rice paper, templates, pointed scissors and small knives.  The delicacy of the finished piece masks just how strong a material rice paper is.

All of our prints are in pristine condition when packed. They are hand rolled in protective paper prior to being carefully placed in a strong cardboard tube. However, it is inevitable that from time to time one will be damaged in transit. If this should happen with your print you should return it (in its original packaging) and a replacement print will be forwarded. Please email us to let us know what has happened.
