The Ruy Lopez or Spanish, 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5, is one of the oldest openings and was first mentioned by Lucena in 1490. Nowadays it is one of the most popular and heavily analysed variations, with the main lines often extending to move 30 or beyond.

The main lines of the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) are now so well-known and heavily analysed that theoreticians have turned their attention to early deviations such as the Classical, Schliemann, Berlin and other defences. These have therefore become excellent weapons for tournament play and are now essential knowledge for the Spanish exponent.
