Description:
An excellent townscape watercolour on artist's paper, signed "C.J. Keates" and dating circa 1900. Framed - approx 26 X 19 inches (66.04 X 48.26cm).

This is an excellent English School watercolour dating from the Victorian period.
The townscape depicts a classic late 19th Century Grand Tour image of the wonderful Flemish city of Bruges with its elaborate characteristic multi-storied buildings below which the shop fronts are dressed with canopies where keepers sell their wears to the public passing in the street. A lady sits in a horse and cart to the left of which brewery men unload ales in caskets ready for the public house on the left, leading the eye down the busy street, chimney billowing with smoke, highlighted in bodycolour, the tall clock tower of a church standing in the background. A classic piece of art, beautifully and accurately depicted with fascinating detailing. The painting bears a "Unicorn Gallery Ltd" sticker verso, reading "View in Bruge - Charles James Keats".
The work is signed "C.J. Keates" lower left for "Charles James Keates".
Date:
The watercolour probably dates to around 1900.
Artist Biography:

"Charles James Keates" British 19th Century artist, flourished 1880 - 1940. - Painter of towns, cities and street scenes throughout Europe.  He visited France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Holland and Venice.  In the towns and cities which he painted the public squares are a clear favourite of his and he selected the nobler buildings such as the town halls and churches, which he depicted with a richness of colouring and wonderful delicate pencilling, bringing together movement and life from a bygone age.
Framing:
Later classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt.
The watercolour is mounted on board with tape and has a cream mount.
Condition:
Excellent. The painting is in fine condition for its age, showing few signs of fading, retaining good rich colouring. The later frame and mount are in good original condition.
