Description: An exquisite figural landscape watercolour on artist's paper, signed "C.H. Weigall" and dating circa circa 1860. Framed - approx 27 X 33 inches (68.58 X 83.82cm). This is an exquisite English School watercolour dating from the Victorian period. The figural landscape depicts the most truly magnificent study of an elk or moose, the painting full of action against a snow covered backdrop. This magnificent creature is being set upon by a wolf pack, twelve in all, the dogs in a frenzy as they track down their prey, some getting bowled over by the efforts of the elk as he tries to escape, the deer having the look of terror in his eyes as he tries to escape his demise, his magnificent antlers no match for so many, his mouth open with breath steaming from his nostrils. The wolves run through the snow teeth bared, tongues panting as they endeavour to move in for the kill. Beyond the sun is setting amid the snow covered forest of tall mature fir trees. The most fabulous painting, beautifully executed capturing the very essence of wildlife and nature in its natural form. The work is signed "C.H. Weigall" lower right for "Charles Henry Weigall".
Date: The watercolour probably dates to around circa 1860.
Artist Biography: "Charles Henry Weigall" (British 1794 - 1877) - Known for his images of animals, this wonderful and gifted artist was a member of the New Watercolour Society and author of books including the "Art of Figure Drawing" published 1852 and "A Guide to Animal Drawing for the use of Landscape Painters".
Framing: Contemporary ovolo moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a gilt mount.
Condition: Excellent. The bodycolour is bright, the animals retaining the wonderful richness to their coats, in all generally in fabulous original condition. The frame has some chips, dings and wear consistent with this type of delicate material.
