Official BPP Learning Media Study Manual for the Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency (CPI)

ISBN: 9780751768466
Published: 2008
RRP: £125.00

The Professional Body
The Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency (CPI) is a qualification awarded by the Insolvency Practitioners Association (IPA). Candidates who are successful in the CPI exam are entitled to apply for affiliate membership of the Insolvency Practitioners Association.

What is the qualification?
The CPI is an intermediate insolvency examination which is recognised both within and outside the insolvency profession as a test of competence in insolvency administration. The qualification can be taken either in order to provide and then demonstrate a solid grounding in the key areas within insolvency and corporate recovery, or as a stepping stone towards the Joint Insolvency Examinations Board (JIEB) exams.

The CPI examination is held once a year, in June. It consists of one three-hour paper which examines the entire syllabus by a mix of multiple choice, short form and longer essay questions. Questions can contain either discursive or numerical elements, and often contain both.

Who is the qualification for?
The CPI qualification is ideal as a target for those starting out in the insolvency profession, whether working for a firm of accountants or lawyers. It provides a basic grounding in the law and practice relating to the main insolvency procedures in the UK. It is suitable both for those who are working in an administrative capacity in the profession, or those who plan to proceed to JIEB and ultimately obtain their insolvency practitioner's licence.

Entry requirements
Student membership of the IPA is open to anyone, whether looking to enter or to advance their career in insolvency practice or related business, financial, accounting or legal fields; or just interested in knowing more about insolvency.

Short outline of the syllabus
The CPI syllabus is very broad. The key areas are:

  • Liquidation
  • Bankruptcy
  • Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs)
  • Administration
  • Receivership

The study manual, written and updated by experts in the field, provides comprehensive coverage of all the topics in the syllabus. Produced in two colours it is easy on the eye and easy to navigate. Each chapter starts with an introduction, setting out learning objectives and putting the subject matter into both the practical and the examination context. Each section starts with an overview, setting the scene and helping to guide the reader through the text. There are interactive questions to help students to test their knowledge as they study, and each chapter concludes with a summary, expressing the content diagrammatically, self test questions and answers and suggestions as to which questions in the separate question bank to attempt as exam practice. The preliminary section of the book contains the CPI syllabus and an analysis of recent CPI exam papers.
