Carved Oak Astragal Glazed Bureau Bookcase / Desk / Cabinet. Circa 1920
This very good quality bureau bookcase is a splendid piece of furniture, and it would make an extremely useful addition to any office or study.
The top is crowned with a nicely fashioned flared cornice and an intricately detailed carved frieze, while the superbly moulded astragal glazed doors form a great part of the overall design. A working lock with shared key is fitted to the right hand door, and the conveniently sized interior is fitted with three fully adjustable shelves.
The wonderfully presented fall is highlighted with well crafted mouldings, and the polished oak interior is fitted with numerous pigeon holes and two drawers. The reverse side of the fall is lined with it's original rexine leather insert which has subtly tooled edges, and it provides a rather pleasant writing surface. There is another working lock with shared key fitted to the fall to safeguard the contents of the bureau.
The three drawers are of no exception to the build quality and impressive appearance of this piece, and ornate brass drop handles allow entry to each dovetailed interior. The lower edges of the bureau provide yet more decorative appeal, while the nicely turned front legs and feet are connected to the rear supports by substantial stretchers which give added strength and rigidity.
The condition is good, however there are some marks consistent with age to mention, and there is a piece of moulding missing from the top centre of the fall just beneath the escutcheon.
The height measures 81 1/2 inches.
The width measures 36 3/4 inches.
The depth measures 18 1/4 inches.
The height to the fall measures 30 inches.
The depth of the shelves measures 7 inches each.
Please note that all measurements are the maximum overall sizes.
