Vintage Carl Zeiss Jena Prismatic Binoculars
8x25 magnification
These binoculars measure 4 inches high
The top and bottom plates and the hinge/hinge plates are made of brass and flat. The body of the binoculars are covered in a dark brown leather or possibly leatherette skin.
The top left plate has the full makers name "Carl Zeiss Jena DRP" in cursive script. The top left plate has the words "Feldstecher Vergr 8" which denotes the model type and magnification. This is also in cursive script. I cannot find a serial number. There is no neck strap.
Cursive script was generally used up until 1905 when it was replaced by capital roman font, so I am dating these binoculars between 1894 - 1905
The correct focus is achieved by turning both left and right eyepiece. Each eyepiece has graduated markings around the edge.
There is good unobstructive vision through the lenses.
The binoculars come with what looks like the original leather case
Condition
Binoculars - The leather covering is peeling away from the body but it is complete and could easily be glued back. The brass needs a good clean and the central pivot to the hinge is corroded at the top and bottom. Someone has scratched the name "K E Hughes MGC" on to the bottom right and left brass plates. The right plate is more heavily scratched than the left. MGC could relate to the Machine Gun Corps of WW1
Leather case - In general good condition with all the stitching intact. The detachable shoulder strap is snapped but complete. The interior is lined with red velvet but there is a small patch that is worn and torn where the binoculars have been slid into the case. The velvet that would have covered the interior of the lid is missing. KE Hughes has also written his name on the bottom of the case and inscribed his initials on the front towards the bottom.
