YOU CAN TELL IF THE VARIATOR NEEDS CHANGING BY THE AWFUL DIESEL SOUND ON START UP THAT USUALLY LASTS FOR AROUND 5-10 SECONDS  AND AT IDLE WHEN FURTHER WEAR HAS TAKEN PLACE. 

We recommend changing the variator  as a matter of course as it can wear out anytime after about 30,000 miles onwards.
