A superb, fine quality authentic gravure print dating from 1926 by the celebrated Emil Otto Hoppé

Mount: 10 x 12 inches

Gravure Prints
Hoppé's photographs of Britain in the early 1920s are wonderfully evocative and superbly printed. These stunning images are presented on conservation standard acid-free backing paper within fine professionally cut mounts, ready for framing.

"Photogravure registers an extraordinary variety of tones, through the transfer of etching ink from an etched copperplate to special dampened paper run through an etching press. The unique tonal range comes from photogravure's variable depth of etch, that is, the shadows are etched many times deeper than the highlights. Unlike half-tone processes which merely vary the size of dots, the actual quantity and depth of ink wells are varied in a photogravure plate and are often blended into a smooth tone by the printing process."

Emil Hoppé
1878-1972

Hoppé was born in Munich in 1878 but moved to London in 1900 to work for a German bank. He became a member of the Royal Photographic Society in 1907 and was already a highly regarded professional photographer before the outbreak of WWI, contributing regularly to Colour and Vogue.
Hoppé travelled extensively in the 1920s and 1930s, producing beautiful, evocative photographic images wherever he went. The superb, rarely seen, prints in this collection are the results of his travels throughout Britain and Ireland in the early 1920s and were first published in book form in 1926.

A superb gravure print from iconic early twentieth century photographer E Hoppé.
