"THE CUT TO CAERNARFON"

A JOURNEY WHICH WAS A FIRST AND MAY NEVER BE REPEATED AGAIN

THE ULTIMATE CANAL ADVENTURE VIDEO?
THE EPIC STORY OF CHRIS COBURNS SUCCESFUL CAMPAIGN TO RAISE THE PROFILE OF ENDANGERED INLAND WATERWAYS

"CUT TO CAERNARFON" PART ONE, THE OUTWARD BOUND VOYAGE
The 1998 "Spirit of Adventure Cruise" by narrowboat "Progress" was run as a sponsored event to raise the profile and public awareness of little used navigations, endangered waterway routes, restoration efforts and important waterside sites. Whilst publicising the threats to navigations and sites nationwide, the cruise was linked to one particluar restoration scheme whose route was being threatened by crossings of a new private toll motorway which could set the active restoration back many years. The Lichfield and Hatherton Canals could, if restored, provide vital links to bring a new source of traffic into little-cruised northern reaches of the Birmingham Canals. The threat to this active restoration scheme had to be brought into the public eye. The cruise also visited Taylors dock at Chester whose future was somewhat unsure, but with sensible ideas in operation this remarkable original boatyard will continue to flourish. We cruise the tidal River Dee, another very under-used navigation and we encounter the results that a lack of maintenance has provided: another stranding for "Progress"! We journey onwards to the North Wales coast, heading to Caernarfon through the Menai Straits, renowned for extremely powerful currents. A pilot guides the passage under the famous bridges before receiving a warm welcome in the Welsh Royal Town. Whilst the cruise was in aid of serious issues there were lighter moments! Join Chris and Hoggie as they go working for British Waterways on loaded boats ... and sing along with the crew at various sites! Also, be introduced to a new type of narrowboat, the Sea Otter, the ideal adventure cruising craft. This is a journey about serious waterway campaigning, a privately funded cruise about real boating values.

PART TWO, RETURN VOYAGE BRINGING HOME THE SLATE
The Progress Cruise had Caernarfon earmarked as the place to gain the national publicity which the "causes" highlighted by the cruise required. Having arrived in the town, the boat got a lot of exposure to the press and the crew really enjoyed the hospitality of the Welsh Royal Town. The return voyage was to see the boat bring a token load of Welsh slate back to the Midlands by water, by one boat without transhipment for the first time ever! To add authenticity to the journey, Joe Hollinshead, British Waterways' last narrowboat Captain skippers the boat out of Caernarfon through the treacherous Menai Straits across Conway Bay to Conway itself. Here a trip is taken up the river to the practical head of navigation before setting to sea for the River Mersey. In Birkenhead, the crew joins the historic warships before making a voyage on the upper Mersey to the entrance of the Sankey Canal, then reaching the head of navigation at Warrington. The boat returns to the Manchester Ship Canal and is joined by ex-MSC tug "Dido" a vessel also supporting the "Progress Appeal". Together, they meet a gathering at Anderton where veteran broadcaster Raymond Baxter delivers a stirring speech in support of waterways restoration. "Progress" once back on the MSC together with two MSC tugs heads a procession of over 100 boats to Salford Quays, the site of the 1998 Waterways Festival. After taking the bow at the Festival, the boat returns to Walsall to attend a Boaters' Gathering before finally delivering the token load of slate to the Black Country Living Museum, A cruise not to be missed with some (certain never to be repeated) sights of narrowboats in unusual situations.
