A fine Majolica wall plate in the Palissy style made by Jose Cunha in Caldas de Rainha, Portugal at the end of the 19th Century.
It is decorated with a snake attacking a large lizard, surrounded by two smaller lizards, a large bug, a stag beetle and a moth, all on a traditional ground of green sieved clay moss.
There is a brown mottled glaze on the underneath rim with two pierced hanging holes in the foot.
It has a diameter of 25cm (9.75")
It is in very good condition for this type of majolica with just a few small losses - see photos - the tip of the snake's tail, the tip of the tail of one small lizard and the end of its rear left leg and the front edge of the moth's right wing. There are no cracks nor restoration. There are some tiny moss losses and some which seem such but are in fact some emulsion paint spots left by a previous owner.
There is an oval impressed Jose Cunha mark to the base and some incised initials.
ADDITIONAL CONTACT INFORMATION Virtually all items we sell are antique ceramics and as such they are always “used” and have a degree of wear. We describe everything to the best of our ability and the photographs form part of that description. All photographs are taken in natural daylight. Please feel free to email us with all your queries, postage enquiries, etc, and we will endeavour to answer you as soon as possible. Feedback will only be left once it has been received. In this way we know that you have received your item and that you are happy with your purchase. If for any reason you are unhappy with your purchase, we would appreciate it if you would contact us via email to resolve the matter before leaving any feedback.
SHIPPING We despatch worldwide and it is unrealistic to list each and every specific postal charge. All postage is charged at COST plus £1.50 for packaging materials. Every care is taken to minimise these expenses and prospective buyers are welcome to request a specific cost. This will sometimes be an estimate as we prefer not to pack items until the auction end so that items are accessible for us to answer any questions about condition. Whenever we can we use recycled outer packaging for environmental reasons. However we use virgin bubble wrap and loose fill inside the package. Every care is taken in the packaging of items. Items will be posted usually within 24 hours but can take up to 3 days after receiving cleared payment. Proof of postage is always obtained so that if any item is lost or damaged in the post a claim can be made from the postal authorities.
