A marvellous finding aid for surname distribution, this demographic tool will indicate concentrations of family names and then throw up a number of strays.
Serious social history research. "Criminal Register Indexes - Surname Master Index, England & Wales, 1805-1816" published by Family History Indexes. CD with 55,000 records from original Home Office documents at the National Archives (UK). (Acrobat Reader *.pdf files; Reader supplied). The Home Office recorded persons charged with indictable offences in England and Wales between 1805 and 1892 in the registers now held as Series HO 27 at the National Archives. These are now being indexed. Full information from the registers is provided in the county volumes and supplements: names, aliases, court, offence and sentence/acquittal; also a variety of statistics showing numbers of (alleged) offenders and ratios within the population. This index gives surname (and surname frequency) and county, to enable the full volume to be consulted. Around 35% of those recorded were not actually found guilty and these indexes give a tremendous insight into the social conditions of the time. Individual county volumes for all crimes and three supplements (Death Sentences, Serious Crimes and Transportation) are available. This volume covers every county in England and Wales. family history, genealogy, geneology Be sure to add me to your favourites list!
